Johnny Ace
Johnny Ace made some amazing records in his short, three year long recording career (supposedly he recorded two songs with Sun records in 1951 but they're long lost). He died Christmas Day 1954, but other than that the story of his death widely differs from source to source. According to some people he shot himself in the head playing Russian roulette after a gig on Christmas eve. Others say he deliberately shot himself during a break in sets on Christmas day, after fighting with his girlfriend and another woman. Some sources say he was waving the gun around and it accidentally went off, hitting him in the head. David Allan Coe says he committed suicide and left a tape of "Pledging my Love" next to his bed... Some people say that it was a .22 caliber bullet that killed him, but with such wide variations in details I wonder how anybody could keep that straight. A must download for fans of Fats Domino, Fats Waller, or other blues piano players of the time.
