Stupid Has A Target

S.H.A.T (or Stupid Has A Target, or She Hes And Transvestites, or Stalin Hitler and Trotsky) was my band in high school. Not to be confused with Shat (without dots), the side project of jeff wood from the dillenger escape plan. We put out our first 7" and it was reviewed in the same issue of maximum rock and rool a the first "Shat" Cd. from then on we were sworn enemies of Jeff Wood and on a lesser degree, the entire state of New Jersey. We rejoiced when we heard that the guy got shot in the head (we're sick people). only to find out months later he survived and continued to play shows. Everywhere we'd play, people would ask "are you the guys with the dildo hats?" To this day, i think there's a lot of people i know who think i was in the other shat and we've just never talked about it, so they think I write 30 second songs about blow-up dolls and eggo waffles all day.

So now im gonna set the record straight with something we never put on record. lookout interweb it's the S.H.A.T Tape from when we played KALX 90.7! If memory serves me correctly, which it often doesn't, this was recorded sometime in 2002. I think we split a set with Civil Dysentery (feature jack From PIGS) But i'm not 100% certain. I remember they were in the room while we were playing and Dara let me barrow his guitar when i broke a string two songs in. It was the night of the Cal/Stanford basketball game which is one of the biggest events of the year. This meant after we unloaded gear we parked miles up into the Berkeley hills. The staff made us promise we wouldn't use the content for a record, but does that cover a virtual record eight years later? I think not. Even without breaking this rule, we were never asked back. Maybe it was because of our excessive use of the word "fuck" on FCC controlled airwaves, maybe it was because we dumped a beer in the recording room and broke a microphone, maybe it's because we brought Smurf and the Big Chief from KZSU who ended up pestering the KALX engineers with their suggestions. Whatever it was they were too uptight in a typical Berkley fashion. The first time we played KZSU Boof puked in the corner, Dave peed in a cup and Chief loved us.

The band consisted of Me (guitars), Mike D.(Vocals) Boof (bass/vocals) and Dave Schmidt (drums). We were all from redwood city when we met, but i ended up moving to San Jose and Coming up to redwood whenever i could get the hell out of there. After high school, Dave moved to Santa Cruz to go to school, Boof and Mike stayed in Redwood, and i moved into my car for about a week before finding a girl who was nice enough to to let me live in her closet in San Francisco. The Band eventually broke up due to the strain of getting us all in a practice space, as well as differing preferences in drugs at the time. We played our Last show in the garage the merry pranksters used to fix their buses in. I borrowed a guitar amp that was way to quiet and played one of the worst shows we ever played. At least there was a keg of Anchor steam.

Dave passed on about a year or two ago, i feel like an asshole for not remembering the date off the top of my head, but it's best not to dwell on that kind of stuff anyway. Me Boof and Mike still kick it from time to time and still play music. I'm in Thrips, Boof is in the Trainwreck Riders, and Mike is in Hammer Horror Classics and Whores Of War. I don't Want to get all gooey and sentimental on you guys but i miss those days, and i miss Dave. I guess I was just lucky to have an experience like that in the first place and i wouldn't trade it for the world.

thanks for posting this ramus. i'll never forget meeting you cuz i hadn't seen mike d. in years and then he showed up at my house with a bunch of teenagers in a stupid punk band and we've been friends ever since. despite the booze fog i have a lot of great shat memories, and appropriately enough, some shitty ones too... were you there when we bought an 8 ball of coke just so we could spell out "s.h.a.t." in it to use for a record cover that never came out? that was stupid.... anyway, there will always be a special place for shat in my heart... just wish that dave had stuck around...
